Ibá announces winners of its Journalism Award
The first edition of the competition received more than 100 submissions of reporting in the print, video, audio and specialized outlet categories.
São Paulo, December 2024 – This Tuesday December 3rd, Ibá (the Brazilian Tree Industry) announced the winners of its 1st Journalism Award. There were 12 winners in the categories for print, video, audio, and specialized outlet reporting, as well as four submissions that received honorable mentions. The winners will receive a total of R$ 36,000 in prizes, as well as a trophy and certificate.
For this first year of the award, Ibá received over 100 submissions of reporting from professionals in 17 states across all of Brazil’s regions. The majority of submissions were in the print reporting category (62), followed by TV (28), specialized outlet (11) and audio (7). The award-winning reporting includes work by major national media outlets, as well as regional affiliates, newspapers and radio stations.
The theme of the award this year was “The planted tree sector as an ally in the fight against climate change.” The reporting covered subjects that included the benefits of planted trees for the environment, technological advances in manufacturing sustainable products, investments in restoring native forests, and the advantages of integrated agroforestry systems.
The winners were selected by a panel of judges made up of leading names in various fields: Heródoto Barbeiro (news anchor at Novabrasil radio and R7 columnist), Dalva Queiroz (researcher at Embrapa Forestry), Elson Fernandes de Lima (executive director of FSC Brasil) and Cindy Correa (communications manager at Ibá). Each of the judges scored the reports based on five criteria: alignment with the theme, relevance, investigative quality, novelty, and style and creativity. The total score determined the three winners for each category.
The Ibá Journalism Award was created to demonstrate support for the press and encourage quality coverage of issues related to the planted tree sector. This project was carried out in partnership with Embrapa Forestry and regional organizations representing forest-based industry. The initiative expands the award created last year by APRE (the Paraná State Association of Forest-Based Companies) to the national level, and has been a great success. In addition to APRE, the partnership includes other regional organizations like ABAF, AMIF, AGEFLOR, AREFLORESTA, FLORESTAR and REFLORE.
