The Ibá Journalism Award was created with the mission of valuing and encouraging quality journalistic reporting on the sector that plants trees for both industrial purposes and restoration of native forests.
The award works to broaden society’s understanding of the importance of this agroindustry, which makes significant contributions to sustainable development in Brazil. By providing visibility for issues that range from technological innovation and job creation to biodiversity conservation and mitigating climate change, this award reinforces the importance of ethical, responsible journalism committed to the truth.
Along with recognizing press excellence, this initiative also helps to bring journalists, experts and society in general closer together, promoting a more qualified dialog on the social, environmental and economic impacts generated by planted trees and the Brazilian forest-based sector.
Nominations for Ibá’s 2nd Journalism Award for 2025 closed on October 1. This edition included four categories for entries: video, audio, and print reporting, as well as specialized outlet. One submission in each category was selected to receive R$ 5,000, along with a trophy and certificate. There was also an honorable mention, with a R$ 3,000 prize.
Once again, the awards were judged by a panel of renowned experts from various fields: Leão Serva, José Otávio Brito and Cindy Correa. Leão Serva was the international director of journalism at TV Cultura, a correspondent in London and the author of works on ethics and disinformation; José Otávio Brito is a senior professor at USP, with experience in research institutions in Brazil and abroad; and Cindy Correa leads the department of communications at Ibá, with a solid background in management and sustainability and experience in important press outlets.

In its first edition in 2024, Ibá received over 100 reporting submissions from professionals in 17 states across all of Brazil’s regions. The majority of submissions were in the print reporting category (62), followed by TV (28), specialized outlet (11) and audio (7). The award-winning reporting included work by major national media outlets, as well as regional affiliates, newspapers and radio stations.
The theme of the award was “The planted tree sector as an ally in the fight against climate change.” The reporting covered subjects that included the benefits of planted trees for the environment, technological advances in manufacturing sustainable products, investments in restoring native forests, and the advantages of integrated agroforestry systems.
The winners were selected by a panel of judges made up of leading names in various fields: Heródoto Barbeiro (news anchor at Novabrasil radio and R7 columnist); Élson Fernandes de Lima (executive director of FSC Brasil and sustainability specialist); Dalva Queiroz (a researcher at Embrapa researcher with a broad academic background); and Ibá’s head of communications, Cindy Correa.
A total of R$ 36,000 in prizes was awarded, along with trophies and certificates for the top three winners in each of the reporting categories: print, radio, TV, and specialized outlet. First place received R$ 4,000, second place R$ 2,000 and third place R$ 1,000. There were also four honorable mentions for regional reporting or those with a scientific approach, which were awarded R$ 2,000 each.
